How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a safe, diluted version of the botulinum toxin, which works by inhibiting the transmission of nerve signals, in turn causing a relaxation of muscles. When administered to facial muscles, this drug keeps the muscles from contracting, and the overlying skin also relaxes and becomes flat against the muscles. Any wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction in the face are lessened. These include frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Unfortunately, any facial lines or wrinkles that are caused by skin damage from the sun will not be alleviated by this medication.
Many have considered Botox to be a wonder drug because of the youthful affects it can have on the face with relatively little effort as compared to the main alternative of plastic surgery. This medication is administered by a set of several injections through a thin, almost painless needle. It is so painless that physicians administer the drug without anesthesia. The effects of the medication begin almost immediately and reach their full affect in about a week. The improvement will last from 3 to 6 months. Many consider this the most important advantage that this medication has over plastic surgery, is that the commitment to treatment is not permanent. In a relatively short period of time, if the affects give undesired results, the muscles to which the drug is applied can be adjusted, or the treatment abandoned altogether.
The initial side effects of Botox application are also much smaller than plastic surgery. Plastic surgery of course involves cuts and reattachments, and can take many weeks before the pain subsides, the wounds heal, and the bruising disappears. The Botox medication also produces bruising, but of a much milder nature. The pain will last for only a few days at most and is low enough to be treatable with over the counter pain relievers. Sometimes the patient has to deal with flu-like symptoms such as nausea and redness, and in a few cases develop headaches, but these symptoms are very mild and considered by most having received the patient as a low impact situation.
As with any treatment, choose a doctor who is well-credentialed and well-recommended to perform Botox treatments. Because of the powerful nature of this drug, a careful choice is essential. One of the first things a credentialed physician will tell you is that this drug should not be administered to a woman who is pregnant, or a new mother who is breast-feeding. In addition, he will do a careful workup to make sure that you are otherwise a suitable candidate for Botox, specifically looking to ensure there is no incidence of certain neurological diseases.
